About Our Chapter

The Kappa Omega chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity was chartered at UNC Charlotte on November 21, 1970, making it the oldest IFC chapter on campus.

Since our founding, the Kappa Omega chapter of Kappa Sigma has been focused around four basic pillars of Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship and Service. As a chapter we aim to give each and every brother the best possible college experience while at the same time giving back to our community via a plethora of local and national charities.

The Kappa Sigma brotherhood prides itself on a tight-knit bond between gentlemen and we host a variety of social and brotherhood events each semester.

Our chapter house is located on-campus in the newly built Greek Village and is always open to visitors and guests.

Levi K. Barnard (1980-2009)

On May 21, 2009 Brother Levi K. Barnard was tragically killed outside Baghdad, Iraq while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. While on patrol, his unit came under heavy attack by enemy forces using improvise explosive devices (IED’s).

Along with Brother Barnard, two other US Soldiers were also killed during the attack.

Brother Barnard joined the North Carolina Army National Guard in August 2004 as a Multiple Launch Rocket System Crew member. Brother Barnard earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UNC Charlotte, and then received his commission as an officer in the Field Artillery through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC) at the university.

After serving in A Battery 1st Battalion 113th Field Artillery Regiment, he transferred to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company 252nd Combined Arms Battalion in Fayetteville of the 30th HBCT where he was assigned at the time of his deployment. This was his first deployment.

Brother Barnard was a proud alumnus of the Kappa Omega Chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at UNC Charlotte and will be greatly missed by each and every brother. As a chapter we are proud of his unyielding dedication and service to our country and we are fortunate to have been able to spend a few precious years with Brother Barnard during his time at UNC Charlotte.
